DOE Funds New Gasification Research

Nov. 11, 2014
The Department of Energy announced new investments in gasification research.

The Department of Energy will fund four next-generation gasification systems that also reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Awardees will receive approximately $16 million to advance the gasification process, which converts carbon-based materials like coal into syngas for use as power, chemicals, hydrogen and transportation fuels. Managed by the Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, the Gasification Systems Program works to ensure that gasification research projects are integrated with other efforts and to ensure efficient technology development with minimum cost to taxpayers.

The projects selected for funding are:

Aerojet Rocketdyne Inc. (Canoga, Calif.) — Advanced Gasifier and Water-Gas Shift Technologies for Low-Cost Coal Conversion to High-Hydrogen Syngas.

Alstom Power Inc. (Windsor, Conn.) — Alstom’s Limestone Chemical Looping Gasification Process for High-Hydrogen Syngas Generation.

Praxair (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) — OTM-Enhanced Coal Syngas for Carbon Capture Power Systems and Fuel Synthesis Applications.

TDA Research Inc. (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) — Integrated WGS/Pre-combustion Carbon Capture Process.
