The Process Industry Practices (PIP) Piping Discipline is PIP’s most prolific discipline, encompassing over 40% of PIP’s total published Practices. The discipline’s newest practice – PNFS0001, Pipe Supports Details – describes the minimum requirements to fabricate or install small bore and large bore pipe supports. In detail, it provides dimensional and engineering requirements for the design and engineering of pipe supports. This enhances opportunities for the industry to streamline design, and shop & field fabrication of standardized pipe supports.
With the addition of PNFS0001, the PIP Piping Discipline is now composed of four sub-disciplines as shown on PIP’s Piping Practice index webpage. These four sub-disciplines are as follows:
Piping Material Specifications & Practices – This sub-discipline includes specific line class material specifications for Carbon and Low-Alloy Steels, Lined or Internally Coated Steel/Iron/etc., Miscellaneous Metals, Nickel & Nickel Alloys, Plastics (other than FRPs), and Stainless (High-Alloy) Steels. It also includes procurement requirements for gaskets, pipe, fittings, flanges, and bolting. Further, this sub-discipline provides guidance with the use of PIP Piping Practices including an abbreviated list of Terms and Acronyms, a Line Class Index, and Line Class Designator System.
Valve Descriptions and Practices – This sub-discipline includes valve descriptions for the same materials as listed in Piping. It also contains three other Practices consisting of Valve Purchase Specification, Valve Commodity Code System and Piping Line Class Designator System.
Piping Engineering & Complementary Practices – The third sub-discipline contains a comprehensive list of Practices on engineering subjects such as Process Unit and Offsites Layout Guide, Piping Flexibility Analysis Criteria for ASME B31.3 Metallic Piping, Design of ASME Metallic Piping Systems, and Piping Examination and Leak Test Guide. It also contains practices on Piping Fabrication, Installation, Testing and Examination as with Vents, Drains, and Instrument Connection Details, Jacketed Piping Fabrication and Installation Details, Leak Testing of Piping Systems, Steam Tracing Specification, and Installation of High Density Polyethylene (HPDE) Piping. This sub-discipline further contains Practices on procurement of pipe, valves and fittings, and Use of Piping Practices.
Pipe Supports Details – PIP’s latest sub-discipline (also mentioned above) contains one Practice that includes specific drawing details for small bore and large bore pipe supports.
Organizing the Piping Practices along these four sub-discipline categories facilitates their use in specific and focused areas of the industry. For example, designers might find a use for all or one of the sub-disciplines while valve suppliers might focus on Valve Practices only.
For those who require only a small number of specific Practices, individual Practices in all PIP disciplines can be purchased as single paper copies online following the instructions for ordering practices on the PIP website.
For those who require a more complete, broader scope of Practices with regular updates as new and revised Practices are published, the PIP Subscription Program will be of interest. Practices are available in PDF file format with the Subscription Program. The PIP Subscription Program allows subscribers to subscribe to individual sub-disciplines as well as the full Piping discipline. Each Subscription is for an initial three year period and pricing can be found on the PIP Subscription Program webpage. PIP will continue to offer all four Piping sub-disciplines as a complete package for the current price of $7,000/year. However, the individual sub-discipline pricing is $5,000/year for Piping Material Specifications, and $1,000/year for (each) Valve Descriptions and Practices, Piping Engineering & Complimentary Practices, and Pipe Support Details. Subscription to all Disciplines will continue at the discounted price of $30,000 per year.
