Packaging Companies Support Use Of Chemically Recycled Plastics

The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Plastic Waste Coalition of Action says it also encourages chemical recycling.
A number of packaging companies say they will increase their use of chemically recycled plastics as they advance their recycled-content goals, according to an article from Plastics Recycling Update. Among these is packaging company Amcor, which reportedly will purchase recycled resin produced through ExxonMobil’s chemical recycling technology. Packaging maker Sealed Air will also partner with ExxonMobil as well as Ahold Delhaize USA to recycle flexible plastics from the food supply chain into new food-grade packaging, according to the article.
In a press release from the Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Plastic Waste Coalition of Action, Colin Kerr, packaging director for Unilever, reportedly says that, “As we continue to reduce the use of virgin plastic, new technologies such as chemical recycling can help drive up recycling rates and increase the availability of food-grade recycled materials.” The Coalition recently published a paper encouraging the “credible, safe and environmentally sound” development of plastics recycling technologies and a life cycle assessment arguing that the technologies could reduce the climate impact of plastic, when compared to waste-to-energy processes.
