The company at the center of the 2019 Port Neches explosion faces opposition from environmental groups over its expansion plans for Houston’s East End, according to an article from Houston Public Media. TPC Group reportedly applied for air quality permits to expand production of butadiene, which the article describes as “a known carcinogen.”

TPC Group’s Port Neches plant was rocked by an explosion two years ago. In the wake of the disaster, the company’s history of environmental violations came to light, according to the article. TPC’s Houston plant hasn’t had a major explosion, but the facility reportedly experienced a fire in 2018 and a flaring incident more recently.
