The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issues its 1,4-dioxane risk evaluation.
In what might be considered a controversial finding, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issues its final risk evaluation for 1,4-dioxane, a common chemical solvent classified as a likely carcinogen. According to an article from E&E News, the agency determines “no unreasonable risks exist for the environment, consumers and bystanders or the general population.”
The EPA did determine that workers in direct contact with the chemical and those nearby do face reasonable risks. Regarding these work hazards, the agency reportedly says, it "assumes compliance with OSHA requirements for protection of workers" and that employers will provide personal protection equipment. The EPA issued its findings on the final day of 2020.
