United Steelworkers sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over weakening of safety rule at chemical plants.
The largest U.S. industrial union is not taking kindly to the Trump Administration’s rollback of an Obama-era chemical safety rule, according to an article from Claims Journal. The United Steelworkers sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week over gutting of a safety rule designed to reduce risks at chemical plants.
The EPA’s “Risk Management Program,” released in November, rids chemical plants of “unnecessary regulatory burdens,” according to the article. The program reportedly weakens the Chemical Disaster Rule, a measure developed in the wake of a deadly explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant and designed to reduce risks through third-party audits and safety technology analysis. The lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia reportedly adds to previous union litigation against the rollback of safety rules, according to Claims Journal.
