Group Urges Alternative Tests for Nanomaterial Safety

Aug. 22, 2013
Tests could provide quick, cost-effective and reliable ways of gathering information.

International experts from government, industry and academia have issued a statement that says alternative testing strategies (ATSs) that don’t rely on animals are necessary for assessing the safety of emerging nanomaterials. The experts concluded that rapid cellular screening, computer modeling and other ATSs could provide quick, cost-effective and reliable ways of gathering certain information on health and environmental effects of the nanomaterials. Details appear in the journal ACS Nano.
