BASF has established new environmental, health and safety goals in an effort. By 2020, the company plans to increase its global energy efficiency 35% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions per ton of sales product 40%. BASF also will start measuring its performance in occupational health using a new “Health Performance Index.” In 2011, the company increased energy efficiency of its production processes by 26% (compared with 2002), and reduced greenhouse gas emissions per metric ton of sales product by 35%. The new goal is to lower the emissions per ton of sales product by 40% by 2020. BASF also reduced air pollutants by approximately 61%. Within the oil & gas business, BASF’s Wintershall company will discontinue all continuous flaring of associated gas within routine operations by the end of 2012. By 2020, Wintershall plans to reduce carbon emissions related to the amount and distance of transported natural gas by 10% compared with 2010. Goals for responsible water use include plans to cut the amount of drinking water BASF used in 2010 in half by 2020. The new “Health Performance Index” comprises five criteria, which include reported cases of occupational diseases; medical emergency planning; first aid; preventive medicine; and health promotion. To improve occupational and transportation safety, BASF wants to reduce the number of accidents by 2020: work-related accidents by 80% (base year: 2002) and transport accidents by 70% (base year: 2003).For more information, visit http://www.basf.com.
