The University of Kentucky will offer a new sustainability degree that focuses on how behaviors impact the environment.
Students who complete the program will earn a bachelor of arts degree in environmental and sustainability studies.
The coursework will be organized into five areas: economics and policy, ecosystems, energy and land, society, and water Resources. Within these areas, students will also have the option to focus on study topics that include environmental justice, biodiversity, renewable energy and the built environment.
The major will include two new core courses for first-year majors, environmental and sustainability studies 201 and 202.
Chemistry Professor David Atwood began developing the program in August to offer an option for students interested in the behavioral aspects of sustainability.
"We will study what people do and how they act," said Atwood. "We will focus less on the science and engineering aspects of the resources and more on sustainable behavior. We hope to complement the existing programs and work with them to strengthen UK’s ability to provide students with education and training in environmental subjects."
