Company looks to expand water-treatment business.

BASF said it has signed an agreement to acquire German water-treatment provider inge watertechnologies AG for an undisclosed amount.

The move will allow BASF to expand its market presence in the growing demand for water reuse, the company said.

"We will be in the unique position to offer performance-based package systems including chemicals and membrane equipment,” said Matthias Halusa, vice president of BASF’s Water Solutions business. This is an important step in our growth strategy for this business."

Greifenberg, Germany-based inge watertechnologies provides ultrafiltration technology, a membrane process used to treat drinking water, process water, wastewater and seawater. The company employs about 85 people.

inge’s products include ultrafiltration modules and rack designs for water treatment plants. Ultrafiltration membrane technology is a low-pressure membrane technique used to separate particles and microorganisms from water.

The transaction is expected to close within the third quarter of 2011.
