Maryland’s waterways hold the dubious title of most contaminated by “forever chemicals,” according to an article from Fox Baltimore. A recent study from the national Waterkeeper Alliance reveals an alarming level of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in the waters after testing across 134 locations in the state. The term “forever chemicals” refers to the fact that the chemicals do not break down in the environment.
According to the article, water samples were taken from 30 states, with Maryland samples detecting the highest level of forever chemicals nationwide. Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, California and Alabama follow Maryland in PFAS contamination. Last week, the Baltimore Mayor’s Office reportedly filed suit against 20 manufacturers of products with PFAS.
