Be On The Lookout For A Seamless Change

April 24, 2012
Under-the-hood alterations add interactive capabilities to website.

What? Be on the lookout for a seamless change – isn't a seamless change supposed to be invisible? For the most part, yes. But as with any change, there may be telltale signs that something is different.

For the last several months I have been working with a team of technical gurus to migrate all the data from ChemicalProcessing.com to a new content management system. For the end user (that's you), everything should look and work the same way. But there are a few tweaks/enhancements you should be aware of.

One of the changes you may notice is different, more-understandable URLs. In the past, our system used numbers in the URL. In 2011, I started to manually create descriptive URLs to make it easier for you to know a link goes to the content you're after and to enhance our visibility in search engines. The new system automatically creates descriptive URLs and has provided descriptive URLs for older content (including articles, products, white papers, etc.), too.  For those of you who link to our site — or provided a link to an article — don't fret. We've put in place redirects to make sure those old links will still work.

Another change on the horizon is in our Ask the Experts area. We are creating forums to correspond with each expert area. You will be able to access the Ask The Expert Forums the same way you did in the past, via  www.ChemicalProcessing.com/experts. The goal is to make this an interactive feature. Of course, our experts will still offer advice for readers. But now we encourage you to offer your advice and comments, too. One caveat — you must be a registered user of ChemicalProcessing.com to contribute. If you're not a registered user, the system will prompt you to become one — it's a quick and easy process. Look for this change soon.

We have taken careful steps to maintain the look and feel of the website. And I have been working like a mad woman to ensure that links work and images appear. But there are never enough hours in the day to test every single link or look at every single image. That's where I'd like to ask for your help. If you notice something isn't quite right on our site, please let me know. Send me an e-mail ([email protected]) with the URL of the page you are looking at and the problem you are seeing. I will aim to immediately fix the problem or alert my techie friends of the issue and have them design a solution. The ultimate goal is to have as few anomalies as possible — so in this case, I hope I never hear from you.

Traci Purdum is Chemical Processing's Senior Digital Editor. She welcomes your e-mails, but hopes that the system migration is a success and you will be e-mailing her for good rather than bad news. E-mail her at[email protected].

On the social media front, be sure to check out her page.
