    The University of Michigan won the academic category award for developing new ways to refine common agricultural waste, such as rice hulls, into materials that can be used in lithium-ion batteries and other products. The new processes can replace the energy and carbon-intensive methods currently used to obtain silicon metals. This slide shows a roadmap defining selected steps in transforming agricultural-waste rice hull ash into multiple value-added products ranging from lithium-ion conducting polymers to silicon carbide for lithium-ion battery anodes.

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the winners of the 2023 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards on Oct. 23 for new and innovative green chemistry technologies. The EPA recognized organizations that have developed chemical products and processes that address significant environmental challenges, such as climate change, while also driving innovation and economic development.
