Calgon Carbon Opens Custom Carbon Recycling Facility in Arizona
April 30, 2013
Company estimates the facility will create 25 jobs in Arizona, with a potential to increase to 62 jobs over a three-year period.
Calgon Carbon Corp. opened its carbon custom reactivation facility in Gila Bend, Ariz., on April 24. Calgon Carbon will be recycling carbon used by water treatment facilities to purify drinking water distributed to surrounding communities, including Phoenix.
Calgon Carbon estimates the facility will create 25 jobs in Arizona, with a potential to increase to 62 jobs over a three-year period.
During the reactivation process, organic compounds that have been captured by granular activated carbon (GAC) are destroyed by being subjected to high temperatures that, at the same time, restore the carbon to a usable state. While this reactivation process reduces the cost of using GAC by approximately 40 percent, it also reduces the carbon footprint associated with the utilization of GAC by as much as 80 percent, according to Calgon Carbon.
Many facilities handle dangerous processes and products on a daily basis. Keeping everything under control demands well-trained people working with the best equipment.
