Virginia biochemist Camille Schrier performs a live science experiment at the Miss America pageant.
Self-described “quirky scientist” Camille Schrier defeats 50 contestants to win Miss America 2020, according to an article from BBC. The 24-year-old Virginia biochemist reportedly performed a live chemistry demonstration on stage – the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide – as part of the talent competition.
Schrier reportedly said she is trying to break stereotypes around Miss America and that the individual in the role should use the platform to educate. Schrier plans to advocate for Mind Your Meds, a drug safety and prevention program, during her one-year reign. According to the article, the pageant is trying to rebrand itself, moving away from appearance-based judging.
