Biden Administration Appears Poised To Crack Down On “Forever Chemicals”
Feb. 3, 2021
Environmentalists expect Biden Administration to target chemicals linked to multiple health problems.
Environmentalists are buoyed by the Biden Administration’s proposed regulations on so-called “forever chemicals,” which have been linked to health problems, while chemical companies urge restraint, according to an article from MarketWatch. According to the article, Biden has pledged to designate PFAS as hazardous substances, enforce limits on their levels in drinking water, incentivize companies to find alternatives and speed up research on their toxicity.
The proposed regulations could reportedly cost chemical companies like DuPont and 3M billions of dollars in cleanup costs. Through a spokesperson quoted in the article, 3M says it will work with the new Administration yet disagrees about the toxicity of PFAS chemicals. The American Chemistry Council reportedly also cautions against labelling all PFAS chemicals as toxic.
