As many as 12,000 substances could fall within the scope of the new “restriction roadmap.”

The EU’s new “restriction roadmap” proposes the largest ever ban on dangerous chemicals, according to an article from The Guardian. As many as 12,000 substances reportedly could fall within the scope of the new proposal, which proponents hail as the strongest set of restrictions yet.

The proposal would use existing laws to outlaw toxic substances tied to health concerns like cancers, hormonal disruption, obesity and diabetes, according to the article. The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) reportedly calls it the world’s “largest ban on toxic chemicals.” The plan centers on entire classes of chemicals for the first time, including flame retardants, PVC plastics and PFAS, or so-called “forever chemicals.”
