Robert Langer’s innovations range from messenger RNA vaccines and artificial skin to products that prevent hair frizz.

The co-founder of Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer Moderna, Robert Langer says he always intended to use his chemical engineering background to help people, according to an interview with Langer in The Guardian. Armed with a PhD in chemical engineering from MIT, he reportedly declined to follow his classmates into high-paying jobs in the oil industry, instead opting for an early position doing cancer research.

Langer’s work has resulted in more than 100 innovations ranging from messenger RNA vaccines and artificial skin to products that prevent hair frizz (developed for Living Proof, one of the more than 40 companies Langer has started). Langer says he doesn’t believe science and engineering are as valued in the U.S. as he would like to see, particularly as engineers can and have changed the world for the better.
