Convicted Harvard Professor Requests Retrial

Attorneys for Charles Lieber call his conviction “a manifest injustice.”

Lawyers for former Harvard professor Charles Lieber are seeking a new trial for the renowned nanoscientist, calling his conviction in December “a manifest injustice,” according to an article from The Harvard Crimson. Lieber was found guilty on six federal counts – four tax-related offenses and two counts of lying to federal officials about his involvement in China’s Thousand Talents program.

Lieber was convicted under the Justice Department’s China Initiative, a Trump administration program targeting those suspected of “trade secret theft” and “economic espionage,” according to the article. Lieber’s attorneys reportedly claim that his statements to investigators were “warped by the government,” and that statements made by the chemist during a post-arrest FBI interview should be suppressed.
