The project will reportedly use the equivalent of 3 million plastic grocery bags.
A paving project at Shell’s petrochemical complex in Beaver County, Pennsylvania will effectively keep the equivalent of 3 million plastic grocery bags out of landfills, according to an article from The Times. Shell Polymers reportedly plans to pave nearly six miles of site roads and 47,000 square yards of parking lots with asphalt enhanced with recycled plastic additive.
Shell is partnering with Canada-based GreenMantra Technologies on the project, which began in March 2020, according to the article. At that time, crews reportedly laid down a test strip of the modified asphalt next to traditional asphalt and monitored it for 12 months. The test strip’s performance encouraged company leaders to use it more broadly at the site, as well as look for additional uses for the technology across other Shell projects.
