Christoph Held Receives EFCE Award for Research in Thermodynamics

Research responds directly to the urgent need for evaluation of biological reactions.

A four-year Ph.D research project has beaten seven other nominations for the prestigious Excellence Award awarded every two years by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) Working Party on Thermodynamics and Transport Properties.

Christoph Held, 32, of the Technische Universität Dortmund, Germany, was recognized for his thesis “Measuring and Modeling Thermodynamics Properties of Biological Solutions,” which received the highest possible grade of summa cum laude and was later published in nine peer-reviewed international journals.

Professor João A P Coutinho of University of Aveiro recommended the nomination.

 “Excellent modeling work is seldom accompanied by experimental measurements of quality because seldom one finds a complete researcher that can excel in both domain,” Coutinho said.

Held’s research responds directly to the urgent need for evaluation of biological reactions.

The five-member evaluation panel of experts from both industry and academia acknowledged “truly novel results” within Held’s research. They also commended his collaborations with national and international scientific research groups and further recognized his dedication to the four-year Ph.D project. Held will accept his award – a certificate and a cash prize of €1500 – at the Thermodynamics 2013 conference, which will take place Sept. 3-6 in Manchester, England.
