Researchers: PFAS From Nearby Plant Detected in Lake Michigan

Jan. 4, 2023
PFAS concentrations in study were much higher than previously detected levels.

Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have contaminated groundwater and streams near the Tyco Fire Products plant in Marinette, Wisconsin, according to University of Wisconsin researchers.

As reported by the Associated Press, the research team said a PFAS plume has seeped into groundwater and made its way into Lake Michigan.

Scientists identified 17 different PFAS chemicals in Green Bay. They found PFAS concentrations of 250 parts per trillion — much higher than levels detected in a previous study of rivers flowing into the bay, according to Christy Remucal, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering.

Researchers used a chemical fingerprinting technique to link the PFAS to the Tyco facility. Tyco said in a statement Tuesday it welcomed the study and had invested “tens of millions of dollars” to address the Marinette pollution.
