The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is looking into ongoing regulatory compliance issues at the Bi-Qem plant in Florence, Massachusetts, according to an article on The Springfield Republican website.
The EPA’s criminal investigation division conducted the investigation, along with city police officers, state environmental police officers and firefighters, the news site reported.
City officials characterized the visit as a “surprise inspection” and said they do not yet know what the inspectors found. Florenec is the location of Bi-Qem’s molding compound division. Bi-Qem is a multinational producer of thermosetting resins and compounds.
In March 2022, Bi-Qem didn’t report a 100-gallon formaldehyde spill as required, according to The Republican.
Following the March problem, city officials called for a meeting with the company’s leadership to discuss the incident, among others, to bring the site into full compliance.
