The American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care initiative is 35. ACC, which represents 190 companies, requires its constituency to commit to the program. Member companies are asked to sign Responsible Care Guiding Principles; track and transparently report company performance on environmental, health, safety and security metrics; undergo third-party audit and certification to Responsible Care Management System (RCMS)/RC14001; and implement product safety, process safety and security codes.
“We are proud of the foundation this program provides for our industry to increase the contributions of chemistry to the world, while decreasing our environmental footprint,” says Tara Henriksen, managing director for the Responsible Care Initiative, in a press release announcing the program’s anniversary.
According to Henriksen, ACC members have a worker safety rate that is five times safer than the U.S. manufacturing sector. “Since 2017, our industry has reduced GHG intensity by 12%, NOx emissions by 39%, and SOx emissions by 18%,” she says.
