A series of explosions set off by a fire at a Dow Chemical plant in Plaquemine, Louisiana, prompted shelter-in-place warnings for areas residents before it was lifted later on Saturday.
The incident occurred at about 9:15 p.m. Friday in Dow's glycol 2 Unit, which makes and handles ethylene oxide, isopropanolamines, alkylalkanolamines and polyethylene glycol.
The Plaquemine site, Dow’s largest in Louisiana, has 23 production units making more than 50 different intermediate and specialty chemical products. It operates two crackers at the site with a combined capacity of 1.54 million metric tons per year of ethylene, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights data.
