A team of university professors received an annual award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for their work on a digital chemical engineering training tool, according to a Rowan University news report.
Recipients of the 2023 David Himmelblau Award for Innovations in Computer-Based Chemical Engineering Education include Cheryl Bodnar, an associate professor in the Experiential Engineering Education Department at Rowan University; Daniel Anastasio, associate professor of chemical engineering at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; Daniel Burkey, associate professor of chemical engineering at the University of Connecticut; and Matthew Cooper, associate professor of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. With support from a National Science Foundation grant, the researchers partnered with Filament Games to design the simulation.
The immersive game, called Contents Under Pressure, puts students and practitioners in the role of a chemical plant supervisor. Game participants make decisions based on various operational conditions, including financial costs, relationships, leadership, production and safety. The goal of the game is to improve safety outcomes in the chemical industry.
AIChE will present the award to the recipients during its annual meeting in Orlando this fall.
