Online Process Heater Simulator Analyzes The Effects Of Furnace Modifications

Sept. 3, 2009

John Zink Co.’s educational organization, The John Zink Institute, now offers an online process heater simulator, a learning tool that enables engineers and operators to study the effects of furnace modifications and understand how to set furnace parameters, according to the company.

With the online process heater simulator, users can alter factors such as fuel compositions, ambient air conditions, firing rates, the position of the stack and the burner damper, and quickly see the results.

Outputs such as excess oxygen, temperatures, heat transfer rates, furnace efficiencies and pollution emissions, such as NOx, can be studied.

“The online process heater simulator allows engineers and operators to analyze the results of furnace modifications that are difficult to study in the field,” says Chuck Baukal, director of The John Zink Institute at John Zink Co. “Students can apply the knowledge they gain from Institute courses toward improving operations at their specific plants. They can also safely test their knowledge and a variety of conditions with the simulator, without the fear of causing an actual heater upset.”

The online furnace simulator is free of charge for anyone that has attended a course at The John Zink Institute. To register for access to the simulator, alumni should visit www.johnzinkinstitute.com.
