In response to a rising demand for Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT) Qualified Specialists, the Hydraulic Institute (HI) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have partnered to offer a two-day PSAT Qualification Workshop in Dallas, Texas. The training, to be held September 7-8 at the Wyndham Dallas North, will prepare professionals with extensive experience in pumping systems to use PSAT in their system assessments.
PSAT was developed to assist engineers and facility operators in conducting preliminary assessments of how efficiently their pumping systems operate and identifying the most likely targets for energy cost reduction. Using algorithms from HI standards and motor performance characteristics from the U.S. DOE database, PSAT quickly estimates existing pump and motor efficiency and calculates the potential energy/cost savings for a system optimized to work at peak efficiency.
The workshop will include field testing, where participants will gather input needed to assess system optimization and energy savings opportunities. Participants will learn:
• How to accurately acquire input data for PSAT
• How to prescreen pumping systems to select the “vital” systems for further review
• How to use the PSAT software
• The difference between measurements and requirements
• The importance of a system perspective
Participants who complete the workshop and pass a qualifying exam will be recognized by the DOE as Qualified Pump Specialists and identified as such on the Best Practices web site. The PSAT Specialist Qualification exam is a rigorous one and a half hour exercise designed to measure knowledge of PSAT software and pump systems in general. HI recommends prior completion of its e-Learning course, Centrifugal Pumps: Fundamentals, Design and Application for participants without substantial knowledge of centrifugal pumps.
