Rotodynamic Pump Efficiency Guidelines Available In New Publication

Feb. 15, 2011
Hydraulic Institute offers data based on test results from pump manufacturers.

The Hydraulic Institute has published its "Pump Efficiency Prediction" guideline to help pump users predict normally attainable efficiency levels at the best efficiency point for selected types of rotodynamic pumps. The guideline takes into account flow rate, total head per stage, net positive suction head available (NPSHA) and service conditions.  The publication includes extensive use of graphs to portray the relationship of pump efficiency versus different parameters.

The guideline contains information that explains how surface roughness and internal pump clearances affect pump efficiency. It can help users understand the power consumption and efficiency loss created by bearings, lip seals, mechanical shaft seals and shaft packing.

The guideline includes information for various pump types including slurry, end suction, ASME B73, mixed-flow and propeller and single and multistage diffuser type pumps.

The Hydraulic Institute utilized data from actual test results conducted by different rotodynamic pump manufacturers, says Gregg Romanyshyn, the Institute's technical director.
