March 10, 2021
The operator of Philadelphia Energy Solutions blames a “mislabeled” pipe for a leak and explosion in 2019 that led to the plant’s closure.
The bankrupt operator of Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) points the finger at the supplier of a mislabeled elbow section of pipe for a leak and explosion in 2019 that led to the plant’s closure, according to an article from The Philadelphia Inquirer. The pipe was reportedly installed 46 years prior to the incident.
According to the article, Philadelphia Energy Solutions Refining and Marketing LLC is suing Babcock & Wilcox Co. for allegedly mislabeling the failed pipe joint, and making claims for negligence, product liability and breach of warranty. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board reportedly identified the 8-inch diameter section of pipe in the refinery’s alkylation unit as the source of the leak that led to the catastrophic explosion. The 150-year-old refinery is permanently closed.
