SABIC’s Innovative Plastics business has been recognized by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) with seven Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Awards, including three for its Mt. Vernon, Ind., manufacturing facility. This marks the second consecutive year the company has been honored by the ACC.
The awards are presented annually to companies with energy efficiency improvement projects, including the creation of energy teams, communications, goal setting, recognition and management support. Individual ACC member companies nominate specific projects for recognition; winners are selected by the judging committee.
This year, ACC presented 73 awards to 19 member companies. SABIC’s Bay St. Louis, Miss., facility won an award for a focus on electrical efficiency in three areas: plant lighting, solar, and replacement of a chiller with a centrifugal compressor.
“Exceptional Merit” was given to a project at the company’s Mt. Vernon facility, in which sodium nitrite is recovered and purified from a wastewater stream and sold commercially. The facility was also honored for two additional projects, whicih involved upgrades to a specialized chemical unit and a Lexan resin unit.
A project at SABIC’s Burkville, Ala., resin manufacturing plant was recognized for replacing a 20-year-old process chiller with one that uses new technology and refrigerants to cut energy usage. The Washington, W. Va., site was honored for a project that simplified plant and instrument air systems, reduced electrical usage and eliminated almost 3 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year.
Finally, the company’s headquarters in Pittsfield, Mass., was received an award for undertaking a multi-year site improvement that featured energy-efficient heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) retrofits. The project led to energy savings and a reduction of 7,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.
