Bayer MaterialScience LLC installed a new central chiller at its South Deerfield, Mass., facility that the company says will save more than 400,000 kilowatt hours annually and reduce maintenance costs.
The new cooling system replaces many small systems that were running inefficiently, causing maintenance issues and downtime, the company says. The central chiller maintains a water temperature of 45 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit in an insulated piping system.
Bayer MaterialScience incorporated the new central chiller into its existing cooling tower system and process water loop. By doing this, the South Deerfield facility was able to focus the chilled water system on critical process points. The new chiller also allows for quicker and easier monitoring of the system, the company says.
