Hydrogen fuel cell systems developer Plug Power Inc. closed a $1.66 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund up to six planned projects throughout the United States, the company said in a Jan. 16 news release.
Plug Power’s Graham, Texas, green hydrogen plant, powered by an adjacent wind farm, is the first facility to receive funds from the loan, according to the company.
The company, based in Slingerlands, New York, has plans to operate a “green hydrogen highway across North America and Europe.”
Plug Power is developing multiple green hydrogen production plants with commercial operation scheduled to begin by year-end 2028.
The company has deployed more than 69,000 fuel cell systems and over 250 fueling stations. Plants currently operational in Woodbine, Georgia, Charleston, Tennessee, and St. Gabriel, Louisiana, have a total liquid hydrogen production capacity of approximately 45 tons per day.
