Summary

This webinar will explain methods for feeding, weighing and batching dry ingredients in various manufacturing processes. It will describe the various options for both volumetric and gravimetric equipment, and explain advantages and disadvantages of each. Weighing do’s and don’ts will be covered to help assure the best weighing accuracy. This information is applicable for any batching operation as well as any continuous operation in which the bulk solid throughput must be measured or in the correct proportion with other materials or variables.

Speakers

Todd Smith | Business and Strategy Manager | Kansas State University - Bulk Solids Technology Center

Todd Smith is Business and Strategy Manager of Kansas State University’s Bulk Solids Technology Center.  KSU-BSTC, a partnership of industry, university, and government, is the only university-based Bulk Solids research center in the Americas. Todd spent 35 years in the bulk solids industry, first at DuPont, then as Engineering Manager at MAC Equipment (now Schenck Process) and then General Manager of Coperion K-Tron Salina and vice president of the company’s Global Systems Group.  He has a Mechanical Engineering degree from Kansas State University and earned his M.B.A in 1998. He has authored one book, as well as many magazine articles and technical papers. Todd’s Board of Director experience includes president of the KSU Dean’s Advisory Council, Process Equipment Manufacturer’s Association, Salina Area Technical College, Salina Chamber of Commerce, Salina Regional Health Foundation, Salina Municipal Band, and Salina Soccer Club.

Kevin Solofra | BSIC Lab Manager | Kansas State University - Bulk Solids Technology Center

Kevin Solofra earned his BS and MS in Ceramic Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla — now Missouri S&T.  Kevin has a background ranging from research engineering with product scale-up through process/production management in various industries. His experience started in the realm of electro-ceramics for appliances, followed by low wear ceramics and body armor, and most recently the glass industry for architectural, automotive and glass insulation. From a process point of view, Kevin has dealt with all aspects from spec’ing raw materials, through conveying materials, and all the way to finished part quality analysis. All of this has led a strong blend of technical expertise combined with a manufacturing/business viewpoint to approaching, understanding, and working through industrial opportunities.

Jonathan McPherson | Director of Advanced Manufacturing and Bulk Solids Technology Center | Kanas State University

Jonathan McPherson is the director of K-State's Advanced Manufacturing and Bulk Solids Technology Center. Jonathan comes from industry having spent 11 years designing and commissioning material handling projects as a project engineer and developing business relationships in the markets of performance materials, battery and general industry as an account executive. His project backgrounds include plastics, PVC, paint, lead-acid battery, food and confectionary. Jonathan works to support the development of advanced manufacturing training by offering industry-focused short courses on bulk solids and material handling. Jonathan also manages the advanced manufacturing research program, which focuses on solving real industry problems. The program includes two lab spaces; The Materials lab focuses on the Flowability, Particle Size, Abrasion Characteristics, and other critical properties of powders and dry materials. The Process lab includes a full scale convey system, and is a new addition to K-State Olathe set to come on line in the summer of 2025.
