Public Health Groups Rally For Chemical Policy Reform

Group points out three fundamental differences between how the chemical industry vs. public health groups define toxic substances.
A coalition of 200 environmental and public health groups called on chemical manufacturers at the annual GlobalChem conference in Baltimore to deliver a substantive platform to reform our federal toxic chemicals policy. The coalition — Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) — released a document outlining three fundamental differences between how the chemical industry vs. public health groups are defining reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
"The chemical industry knows it needs to respond to the increasing scientific evidence linking toxic chemicals to disease, and consumer demand for safer products," says Andy Igrejas, National Campaign Director for the coalition, which represents more than 11 million health-care professionals, environmental health advocates and concerned parents around the country. "But reforming TSCA is not just about improving PR for the chemical industry — it's about genuinely protecting public health."
